The End is Near

 London Feb 27 - March 2

London what can I say it’s my favourite big  city not sure if I’d want to live here but great to visit.

So much to see and do and we did a lot in the 3 days we were here. After arriving on the afternoon of the 27th we headed downtown to take in another play in the theatre district, The Book of Mormon a comedy musical that was great. The theatre district brings in huge amounts of visitors and locals every night every restaurant is packed before and after a show. There must be at least twenty theatres in this district with a wide variety of plays and musicals every night of the week.

Feb 28th   Sports Day

Today we dedicated to sports, after a early breakfast at our hotel we to a 45 minute tube ride to Wimbledon and toured the 42 acre site with its 18 grass tennis courts. An immaculately kept facility and an excellent tour guide. The amount of attention in the upkeep of all the grass courts is amazing moving heaters creep across the top of the courts and fans run constantly so as not to let the grass be affected by cold weather. We made a quick walk through their museum as we had more things to see. You need to book ahead of or all the tours and they are very strict about being on time or you can’t be late…no refunds.

Our next sports tour was the Lords Cricket Stadium built on this site in 1822, is a blend of new and old architecture and history. This is the Capital of the world cricket scene and tradition ruins deep in this facility. Our tour of about 15 people were rabid crickets fans from Indian who were on a bucket list tour to the Holy Grail of Cricket . We were asked a couple of times why we Canadians were there as our knowledge of cricket is very limited, I just said we stumbled across this site while looking at Google maps and decided to take a tour, it didn’t disappoint. Another great tour guide who has been a member of the club for 37 years gave a great tour and was very patient with some of my questions about the game and the Lords cricket facility. A big rivalry between Wimbledon and Lords is as to has a better grass field, to me they both look pretty good. The main club house and locker facilities have not changed in over 200 years and it’s pretty cool to see the pride in their traditions for this building while the rest of the stadium is ultra modern. I would love to come back and visit and see a game, one of the fellow tourists from India said I must come to Mumbai to see a game there, maybe that’s on our next trip.

After sport facility tours we got back to our hotel about 5:30 sat in our room ,looked at each other and decided at the last minute to see another play. An hour later we were back downtown to see the musical play “Pretty Woman” again another great show to wrap up a busy day.

March 1st

Our last full day in London so we got up early took the Bakerloo train to the Borough market a farmers and foodies idea of heaven. This market has a history going back 1,000 years and has been an active daily market since the late 1700’s, we had a British breakfast and toured this five acre market with it’s amazing cheese, meat, fish and fresh vegetables it truly is a foodies Mecca. We that proceeded to walk to St Paul’s cathedral where Chuck and Di got married. Another good audio guided tour and climbed 500 plus stairs to the top to get a great view of London. One thing about the London Museum scene they all have staff which are available to answer questions which we didn’t see in many of the other sites we visited. 24,000 steps later we got back to our hotel for a quick rest and a beverage and then headed out for diner and another play “Oklahoma “ it was a new production with a few revised parts, it was Ok but not our best show we took in. So it was back on the tube back to our hotels and we called it’s day, as we head to the airport the next day.

Summary

If you have been reading our blog we have done a ton of things and everyday we were busy why travel this far and sit around. Travelling this time of year may not have the best weather but we did not have to wait in any lines and tourism is lower this time of year, I couldn’t imagine doing this tour in the summer heat and millions of tourists around. We had a great time visiting Gordie and taking in the hockey games in Aalborg with the rabid fans from Herning who love there team. Visiting the Scandinavian countries was also great as there whole lifestyle revolves around being very chill and enjoying their great quality of life without the materialistic distractions. Every place we visited had a story to tell and you have to appreciate all the history that these places have and they embrace. We definitely have had a wonderful time and can’t wait to where we go next.

Thanks for reading our Blog!!
